ANAÏS BALMON

artist statement

Anaïs Balmón (*1992, Geneva, CH) - also known by her artist name Gouaille - lives and works in Bern, CH. She received her Bachelor’s degree in Visual Arts from the HEAD – Geneva in 2020. And her master degree from the Master of Contemporary Arts Practice at the Hochschule der Künste Bern.

Starting from a sensation, an emotion or an experience, she works with voice, field recordings and writing which she transposes into sound and spatial installations, containing objects or visual elements. She uses the space to bring the audience present in the room to another space, which could be from a particular interior. In this liminal, chaotic or mental space, there is always an explicit or underlying movement.

In her Master’s thesis, she worked with the subject of anxiety using descriptions of recordings she made with a hydrophone, and a transcript of a hypnosis therapy, mixing the two subjects, taking the reader in a noisy inner underwater world.

Her work has been presented amongst others in: Guérir avec Gerrie art residency (2023), Dampfzentrale Bern (2022), ToBE Gallery Bern (2022), Collège Calvin Geneva (permanent installation).
