STELLA SPINEDI

artist statement

Stella Rosangela Kiyomi Spinedi (she/her) is swiss, born in Mendrisio in 1999.

A state of tension and potential (action) triggers her artistic process which takes the impulse of a challenge, that through bodily confrontation with the materials leads to the concretization of something that first seems undoable and slowly gets shape.

Stella mainly builds objects or installations and creates performances where the functional serves the empathic body to shape an experience.

She gets inputs from many different fields including her family story and the tradition of the carpentry profession; but also from physical training, anger, power dynamics, and politics.

Her position is to use the materiality of the object, its honesty and its sensuality.

She doesn’t care to satisfy the spectator’s needs and sees the over-interpretation of the work as an inadequate search for comfort.

Among other venues, she exhibited her works and showed her performances in group exhibitions in Kunsthalle Bern, EAC Les Halles, Kunsthaus Langenthal, EGG space (solo), and Die Alte Schreinenrei Bern.

She is the founder and an active member of CALCI collective.
